    A fine art photography exhibition of member works juried by Kit and Gary Putnam, owners of Black & White Lab in Arlington, VA. During the last 20-plus years, the Putnams have processed amateur and professional film containing nearly eight million images and printed several hundred thousand photographs, and have mounted nearly 35 photo shows in their gallery space.

  • “Imaging Blackness” Exhibition

    This new exhibition, “Imaging Blackness, 1915-2002: Film Posters from the Indiana University Black Film Center/Archive,” features dozens of movie posters from a variety of black films, including westerns, musicals and dramas. These vintage posters represent the marketing of black entertainers who contradicted or strengthened stereotypes as they built a successful place for African Americans in film. A film series will be held in conjunction with this unique study of commercial art, American cinema and black history. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Military Bugler Performance and Lecture

    Jari Villanueva, the nation’s leading authority on U.S. military bugle calls and on the mournful tune “Taps,” is the featured presenter during a program of Civil War military music. Villanueva will demonstrate calls on an original Civil War bugle and talk about the role of field music to signal camp duties and battlefield movements.     This program on the Civil War, as depicted in children’s literature, is suitable for elementary school children. Reading and group discussion will focus around two children’s books based on historical events from the Civil War-era. "Mr. Lincoln’s Whiskers," written and illustrated by Karen B. Winnick, tells the story of young Grace Bedell, who wrote to Abraham Lincoln suggesting he grow a beard – and he did! "The Silent Witness," written by Robin Friedman and illustrated by Claire A. Nivola, focuses on the McLean family, in whose parlor at Appomattox Courthouse the surrender was signed in the presence of key people and a doll named Lula, the silent witness to history!     George Washington’s Gardener’s House, the last of the original outbuildings at Mount Vernon to be restored, will open to the public with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, “show and tell” of discoveries made during the restoration process, and a presentation by Washington’s gardener, “William Spence” on Friday, March 21 at 11:00 a.m. The first floor with its three rooms is furnished to show visitors how the gardener would have lived in this building that is located just off the Mansion’s circle. “William Spence” will interact with visitors following the ceremony and over Easter Weekend, March 22-23.

    Because it’s never too early for kids to appreciate history, the museum developed this special program for toddlers (walkers through 36 months) and their caregivers. Tavern Toddlers features a weekly open playtime on the first Monday of the month. In March, the focus is Going on a Trip where children will go on adventures as they pretend to be travelers. $10 for a group of three. 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
