Del Ray & Arlandria

Del Ray Map

Art extend to all mediums in this streetcar suburb from traditional mediums such as painting and sculpture to modern art and chocolate. In the fall, the arts are celebrated with the multicultural event and festival, “Art on the Avenue” on the first Saturday in October. A bustling, eclectic mix of local stores and restaurants clustered around Mount Vernon Avenue create a Main Street feel in the center of this neighborhood founded in 1894. Charming late 19th and 20th century bungalows give Del Ray a homey feel. Often the neighbors can be found walking dogs and kids, meeting friends at favorite dinner spot, picking local produce at the Saturday Farmer’s Market, or getting a scoop of the frozen custard flavor of the day.

North of Del Ray along Mount Vernon Avenue is Arlandria, a small neighborhood nestled between Arlington and Alexandria. The Birchmere, a legendary music hall known for launching the careers of musicians, calls this neighborhood home. Arlandria is also popularly known as Chirilagua, for the El Salvadoran village that was at one time home to many of its residents. Small shops and restaurants with an international flavor line Arlandria’s streets.
